The Gospel Guru Interviews Damita
Tyscot Recording Artist, Damita captures the depth of Gospel, the exciting sounds of R&B, and the fun of Pop music. And she did just that on her new studio LP, “Anticipation.” Described as a true gem, “Anticipation” features many songs written by Damita including, “Won’t Turn Back”, “Praise You Now”, “Be Revealed”, “You’re Amazing God”, “Super She’RO” and the title cut “Anticipation (Waitin 4 u)”.
The Gospel Guru caught up with the singer-songwriter, and in my candid interview with the vocalist, Damita spoke on everything from collaborating with a new producer, gives her take on success and much more. Get into the interview below…
- Describe Damita in three words. Sensitive, strong, and prayerful.
- What was your inspiration for “Anticipation”? Inspiration for it was life. Life is always my inspiration for music. You can just say so much through music about experiences you’re going through…the highs, lows, the good, and the bad. So life was definitely an inspiration for this record. It really was a tribute to the strength of Women, really in particular my mom and my life.
- Do you feel any pressure with this release being the follow-up to “No Looking Back”? I do. I feel the pressure not really so much to follow-up behind “No Looking Back” but because I think it evolved into something that I really didn’t anticipate. The sound is different, I worked with a new producer…the place I was mentally and spiritually was different. I’m just really amped to hear people’s response to it.
- You mentioned you worked with a new producer, who did you work with? His name is Frederick aka Blaze out Chicago, Illinois. A BEAST, he’s an absolute beast. I told him “I’m his Brandy, he’s my Rodney” that’s the kind of collab we had. I love the collab and the chemistry we had along with one of my musician’s Phillip Bates who produced two songs on the album and Brandon Avery Smith co-wrote with me on a few records. So I had a new team on this album, it created a new sound. I evolved into something else, which I think a lot of artists should do…branch out, evolve. Don’t be afraid of new sounds, don’t be afraid of new beats, don’t be afraid of creativity. I was able to create on another level with this record.
- What prompted you to work with a new team on this album? Well, Blaze had worked with my husband Deitrick prior to working with me, so Blaze was on the “Church on The Moon” record and he produced a couple of HOT joints. And when I heard Blaze’s stuff, I was like this dude is crankin’ out hit after hit. I love everything that Blaze did…Blaze was amped about working with me and I was amped about working with him as we were doing the “Church On The Moon” record. I only wanted one producer so we could gel and get one consistent sound, and that’s what we did.
- What was your most memorable experience during the making of “Anticipation”? The drives back and forth to Chicago…hahaha. I drove every weekend or other weekend. I think this was one of the most longest record’s, that’s what’s most memorable. It was the most longest record’s that I’ve done, normally we do records In a week or two weeks. It seemed like I spent forever working on this process due to everything that was going on in my life and my mom passing…it took forever because I totally shut down after that. I think I probably shut down for a good 2 or 3 months afterwards before I jumped back into trying to do a record. So that was the most memorable.
- Lastly, how does Damita define or determine success? I don’t chart success as ratings or how many times you’re seen on TV. My thing is if I’m not truly living the life that i’m supposed to live in God after the lights are gone off, after the microphones are shut off, after the crowd and fans have cheered you on…if I don’t have a relationship with God and I’m not obeying what he’s told me to do that’s an epic failure. So for me success is my relationship with God and executing what i’m supposed to be doing, what Damita is supposed to be doing in the kingdom. To me, if i’m doing that then that’s the most success I can ever have.
