- Describe Dorinda Clark Cole in three words. The Church Girl.
- How do you remain relevant in the music industry? It takes a lot of prayer, your ear needs to be to the street, and you have to stay in the word and make sure you have a prayer life. Just constantly feeding what it is you have to have for the industry and the ministry.
- What was your inspiration for your new release “I Survived?” My inspiration was my going through so much. I was in a fire last year, and I lost a lot of things, but not only that I lost my mother-in-law and she was the one who raised my children while I was on the road, she was close to my heart. God has allowed me to be a testament to so many people just to let them know I survived, and if I survived you can too.
- What was your experience like with Warryn Campbell, and how did that collaboration come about? That was a wonderful experience! Working with Warryn Campbell was new for me, so it’s always a joy working with another a producer, but sometimes it’s a challenge because you don’t know how they work. It was a joy working with Warryn; he made it so easy. I’d love to have that experience again.
- What was your most memorable experience in creating “I Survived?” The live portion was phenomenal! I did it in Nashville at SIR studio, and they saw me on a smaller scale. It’s one song in particular that everyone loves which is “He Brought Me,” but nobody knows what we had to go through on that particular song. The power of God came in that place and we could not shut it down. That’s one night I’ll never forget. I also got a chance to do a duet with Twinkie, and she gave me something fresh, I told her I didn’t want a Clark Sisters’ remake. It was phenomenal to hear us singing together.
- Who are some other artists you would like to collaborate with in the future? I would love to collab with Marvin Winans. We were going to try and do it on this album, but with our different schedules we couldn’t hook up. I’d also like to work with Earnest Pugh, we’ve talked about that before…just so many of my peers I’d like to work with. I ran into Rachelle Ferrell, and I had no idea she listens to me, so I’d like to do something with her as well.
- As a successful gospel artist, how do you define success? That’s a great question. How do I define success? Well, you have to go through in order to be successful. There’s not a person that’s been successful that doesn’t have a story about going through. In going through it breeds inspiration, it allows you to see where you’ve come from. You can’t talk about success without talking about your past. When I look at my past, and having people that were inspirational and made deposits in my life those things helped me continue in the right path. You have to go through in order for God to come through. I believe that’s why I survived today and to be as successful as I am because of my character and integrity. I knew I had fans following me so I had to keep my life in order.
