Pop star Mariah Carey was honored with the BMI Icon Award in Los Angeles over the weekend.

Of the night’s many performers, Gospel royalty Karen Clark Sheard took to the stage, and delivered a soul-stirring rendition of Mariah Carey‘s smash hit “Anytime You Need A Friend“. Carey has always cited Sheard as a vocal influence so I was elated when I heard that she was apart of the line up to pay tribute to Mariah.
