7up w/ Montell Jordan

The Gospel Guru caught up with Montell Jordan. We all know Montell from his mainstream hits such as “This Is How We Do It” and “Let’s Ride.” But now Montell is a new man, and he’s all about ministry. I was extremely excited to catch up with Montell to discuss his newfound faith and to see what we could expect from him as a Christian/Gospel artist.

In the latter part of 2011 Montell and Victory World Music released their first release titled “Shake Heaven.” The new album features original music penned by Jordan and other members of the Victory World Church worship team. Welp, without further delay sit back, relax, and get a bit of 7up with Pastor Montell Jordan.

  1. Describe Montell Jordan in three words. Changed, Free, and Usable.
  2. Why do you feel that you’re necessary for Christian/Gospel Music? Well, I don’t feel that I’m necessary for Gospel music. I feel that I’m necessary to God. A lot of times artists feel like they’re necessary, and the reality is that God doesn’t need us we need him. So as far as being necessary for gospel music, I don’t feel that I’m necessary.
  3. How was your transition from the Mainstream to Christian/Gospel music? The transition was definitely a life transformation. I didn’t necessarily make a transition into the gospel arena I feel like a made a transition into full time ministry. I’ve been called out of the world into full time ministry; it just so happens that in this new calling that I’m able to musically reach a diverse group of people.
  4. What was your inspiration for “Shake Heaven?” The biggest inspiration was as god was giving me the tools to transition from the world into full time ministry I believe he still wanted to use my gift for the kingdom. What I did in the world was pull emotion from people to inspire energy or an anthem; it was a gift I always used. Shake heaven is just a continuation of creating anthems, but with a God driven purpose.
  5. What can we expect from Montell Jordan musically? You can expect honest music. Now that I’m in the kingdom, and I’m fully covered by his grace I feel there are some things in Gospel/Christian music I can help change and enhance. For me as an artist that comes with being real and transparent in the music. I feel like its my job to create and alternative of music for our children and the next generation to listen to. I want to put out music that’s just as hot as an Usher or Trey Songz album, but God driven.
  6. What was your most memorable experience in the making of “Shake Heaven?” My most memorable experience was when I was in the studio with Beckah Shae and the producer Shoc I was joking around with the song and I included a line from “This Is How We Do It” and I kinda shook it off and thought it was corny..lol but Beckah Shae told me to keep it in the song and I was like nah I did that in the world, but she convinced me to keep it in the song. That turned out to be one of the best things I could have done. So yea that has to be one of my most memorable experiences.
  7. Having been a successful artist, what do you want to accomplish as a Gospel artist? I just want to be used, man! Its soo many people from where I come from that will do anything to stay relevant. I want to be used by God so that my life will amount to much more than just the guy that sang “This Is How We Do It.” With me making this transition I just want to be used by God!
