7up w/ Byron Cage
Byron Cage, who has become a household name in Gospel music after such Top-10 worship anthems such as “The Presence of the Lord” and “I Will Bless the Lord,” is pouring his heart out in his new and ninth LP, “Memoirs of a Worshipper.” Collaborating again with super-producer Aaron Lindsey, who produced Cage’s ’09 release “Faithful to Believe,” the 11-song CD, recorded at Chicago’s Christ Universal Temple, showcases Cage’s personal desire for a deeper relationship of worship with God.
The Gospel Guru caught up with Cage for a brief 7up session, probing the singer about his latest LP, his take on success, being deemed the “Prince of Praise” and much more. Cop a gander at the exclusive interview below..
- Describe Byron Cage in three words. Passionately crazy guy
- What was your inspiration for your new album “Memoirs of a Worshipper?” Well you know on my last cd “Faithful to Believe” I was really catering more to the recession and things that people were going through and building up their faith. But the last couple of years I’ve been writing songs that were really really worshipper songs and songs that were from my heart-just back to God about how grateful I am to him. I wrote a song “Gratitude” that expresses those times. This album really shows my total reliancy and dependency on God, and that’s why I called it “Memoirs of A Worshipper.”
- What song is a standout for you on the new project? Of course the first song “Great & Mighty “ was a huge song that night when we recorded it, so that’s definitely a standout. Another standout would be a song Aaron and I wrote called “Out of Them All,” which I believe will be the 2nd single. It’s another one of those up-tempo songs that the people like to hear from me. There are so many diverse songs on here that I think can generally touch everybody.
- This is your second time working with producer Aaron Lindsey, what was the experience like this time around? He’s a phenomenal producer; he just captures me where I am spiritually and musically. When we sit down and talk about the project he always wants to know where my heart is and what I believe it is that God is saying. He recognizes that it is still my project, a lot of times producers have the tendency to produce something, but don’t really get the heart of the artist a lot of times. I just think that he heard my heart and captured everything I wanted to say.
- Are their any other producers/songwriters you’d like to collaborate with in the future? I would have to think about that because God has afforded me to do a lot of different things in the industry. I’ve done a lot of stuff with a lot of people!
- With you being deemed the “Prince of Praise” do you feel pressure to deliver music that will live up to that title? You know I kinda dropped that name…I didn’t want anybody to think that I was trying to put myself up to be anything! My pastor on the intro of ‘The Presence of The Lord” cd said “he’s the prince of Praise” and Vickie liked that so she took it and marketed that. And that’s where that came from, people thought that I called myself that but I didn’t…that is something that my Pastor did. The record label liked that so they marketed it that way, and any time you market something it gets branded. So it became a brand, but I kinda stepped away from that and asked people not to call me that anymore. Just call me Byron, that’s good enough for me.
- With you being a successful Gospel artist, how do you define or determine success? Wow, that is a great question because some people have financial success but they don’t have success in their personal lives and they don’t have integrity. Success to me–the bible says is simply the ability to walk in purpose and in integrity and be blessed because of it.
