7up w/ James Fortune

James Fortune, a name that’s been on the tip of everyone’s tongue since his smash hit single “I Trust You.” Since then Fortune has rendered a new project, joined a new label, and has entered the world of entrepreneurship. I was quite anxious to catch up with James Fortune to discuss his success and the new venture he’s embarked upon.

James Fortune and Fiya’s latest project ‘Identity’ debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Gospel Album chart. If you haven’t done so already be sure to stop by iTunes and check it out. Now sit back, relax, and get a bit of 7up with James Fortune.

  1. Describe James Fortune in three words. Husband, father, and minister.
  2. What was your inspiration for your new release ‘Identity?’ It was basically dealing with as believers us understanding our identity in Christ. I feel like a lot of Christians are frustrated because we’re dealing with an identity crisis. When you understand who you are you know what you have access to. The song identity simply says change my identity, make me more like you…not just in my actions but also in my thoughts.
  3. How’d your collaboration with Monica come about, and what was that experience like? Monica and I developed a friendship over the last two years. She really loves God and is a Christian. As we got closer I discovered her love for God, and I told her we should do something on my record and of course she agreed. She was amazing, I was blessed by her testimony. She’s very encouraging, and Is always encouraging people to trust in God. It was a wonderful experience.
  4. Who’s someone that you’d like to collaborate with in the future? I’d like to work with Rodney Jerkins. He’s one of the greatest producers of our time, he’s someone that I’ve wanted to work with for a while now. Hopefully on the next project we’ll be able to make it happen.
  5. Tell me about your new imprint, Fiya World Music. It was a blessing to be able to partner with Light Records and be able to put my first album out under my own label. It’s just a blessing, to be able to put out your own record under your own label is a great feeling. At some point we’ll be looking to give other artists a chance to reach their goals by signing to the label. It’s a great feeling, I’m really excited.
  6. You have another Top 10 radio hit (Still able) under your belt, why do you feel that your music is received so well?  It’s a blessing, it’s just kinda where we are right now as a nation. Sometimes we can get caught up in things going on in the economy, but we have to remember that God is still able. People just relate to songs that inspire and encourage and edify us.
  7. What’s next for James Fortune? I’m really excited about the label, so we’re getting ready to start on my wife’s project. She’s always been influential in every recording I’ve done, and she’s a phenomenal vocalists and songwriter so now she’s finally ready to do her own. So be looking out for Cheryl Fortune’s first solo project about a year from now.
