Album Review: CeCe Winans – ‘Something’s Happening! A Christmas Album’

This year marks 20 years since CeCe Winans last released a Christmas album. 1998’s “His Gift”, her very first solo holiday album is considered to be quite a gem in her catalog of music. For over a decade now, Winans has said that she wanted to release a new Christmas album, but fans wondered when exactly that was going to happen. Finally, the wait is over and the project proves to be well worth the wait.
CeCe teamed up once again with her son Alvin Love III, who produced her 2017 comeback album “Let Them Fall in Love”, which went on to take home 2 Grammy Awards earlier this year. Alvin wrote all of the new songs and produced this entire new project as well.
The album “Something’s Happening: A Christmas Album” is classic CeCe Winans, while at the same time captures the essence of what the holiday season should feel like. It features 5 brand new songs and 5 classic holiday covers. The title track “Something’s Happening” makes for the perfect opening song. It speaks of the miracle that took place the night Christ was born and all of the amazing benefits of that miracle.
Another new song entitled “This World Will Never Be the Same” is a ballad which features a full orchestra on display throughout the song, but an even more powerful message reflecting on the impact of the birth of Christ. The next track entitled “Giving Season” is one of the most “feel good” and upbeat songs on the album that really showcases the spirit of the holiday season. The lead single “It’s Christmas” definitely gives off a strong & classic Stevie Wonder type vibe and based on its sound is easily a classic holiday tune. The lyrics are more than relatable and very true to the reality of the holiday season for most people.
This will most definitely be an album you’ll want to pull out for many years and holiday seasons to come.
