From The Vault: Tonéx – ‘Bout A Thang’
In 2002, after setting things ablaze with his debut LP, TGG-favorite Tonéx released his follow-up LP, and just when everyone thought the singer-songwriter-producer had already peaked, he hit us with “O2.” And spawned hits such as “God Has Not 4Got” and “Bout A Thang,” which happens to be the ‘from the vault’ pick this week.
“Bout A Thang” penned and produced by Tonéx, the track – which is a Pop/R&B/Soul triangulation of sorts was released as the second single from his sophomore effort “O2.”
The album reached No. 7 on the Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart, No. 20 on the Top Contemporary Christian chart, No. 20 on the Top Heatseekers chart, and No. 66 on the R&B Albums Chart. Indeed, “O2” pushed all musical boundaries and showcased the singer’s amazing vocal ability.
The dance-themed accompanying visual, helmed by director Vinny Harris does a excellent job of showcasing Tonéx as a dancer. All the while, presenting us with something new and fresh. At that time what Gospel artists were doing full-out choreography in their music videos? None. The dance performance bits make for a nice addiction.
In a time where a lot of the Gospel music sounds the same, and many artists are following the current trends attached to Gospel music let’s reminisce and appreciate the brilliance of this classic. To this day, I’m still bumpin’ “O2” in the car.
