Album Review: T.R.U. Praise – ‘Journey’

T.R.U. Praise, a group that you may or may not be familiar with, but a group you definitely want to keep your eye on. The Brooklyn, New York natives are crossing all kinds of borders and boundaries with their debut release “Journey.” And after hitting play the set definitely takes you on a musical Journey. From the bold album cover to the pulsating and high energy music T.R.U. Praise is in a lane of their own.

Journey” the debut project from T.R.U. Praise debuted at No. 6 on the Christian & Gospel iTunes chart, and that for any artist is a good look definitely an indie artist! The set is bolstered by tight production and lots of originality. A neo-soul/jazz/rock triangulation of sorts, the set was primarily produced by the group’s musical director Paul Engram, and all songs were penned by T.R.U. Praise’s frontman, Marcus Pass.

Opening with the progressive and intricate “Journey’s End” instrumental, then goes on to showcase T.R.U. Praise and their tight blend on track 2, “Great Creator.” What I appreciate most about this group is the fact that they didn’t attach themselves to the current trends of Gospel music, and dared to be different. Although, I deem this 12-track LP as a cohesive and solid body of work I do have my favorites!

A shining moment for me on the “Journey” LP is “Greater Than” featuring Doobie Powell. The beautiful ballad simply reminds you that God is greater than anything that may come your way. The cut boasts a respectable vocal performance from Doobie Powell as well as other lead vocalists, and I can’t leave out the sonic brilliance! Lyrically simplistic and sonically astounding, this cut is sure to be a favorite! Other standout tracks for me is the energetic and pulsating “Fix My Heart,” and “The Calling.”

The fact that this indie group was charting so well on iTunes on their release date, and their eye-catching artwork caught my attention I just had to HAD to inquire about them. And boy am I glad I did, T.R.U. Praise is definitely a breathe of fresh air. Be sure to keep your eyes and ears open for more from T.R.U. Praise in the future. Meanwhile, be sure to stop by iTunes, and get their  debut release “Journey.” Also, be sure to connect with T.R.U. Praise on Facebook and Twitter @TRUpraise.
