iPod Pick: ‘You Stayed’ Feat. James Fortune
It’s all bouncy gospel on ‘Good God’ Shirley Caesar’s latest project. And the amazing thing is even at 74 she’s still got the pipes, hot and ready to drop a sound this new generation wouldn’t mind having on their playlist.
Shirley Caesar who has released over forty albums spanning sixty years, acquiring eleven Grammys and seven Dove awards is sure a legendary, must have in the gospel music hall of fame and sure an inspiration to lots of the gospel artists we rave about these days. On the soulful and soon to be loved ‘You Stayed’ Shirley features the amazing James Fortune. ‘Good is good’ which starts off the album in a very upbeat way features the Thompson Community Singers. ‘Not Through Yet’ reminds us of the Swing Low -type bouncy negro spiritual sound we love to hear but find it hard to get these days on the gospel scenes since it’s only been preserved by artist like Hezekiah Walker and LFC. Also songs like ‘In God’s Perfect Hands’, ‘When You Pray God Answers’, ‘God Will Make a Way’ would stir up faith in hearts. ‘It’s Nice to be Nice’ is a must listen, with an upbeat playful sound, it passes an great message around.
For Shirley Caesar who is pastor to the 1500 congregation of Mount Calvary Holy Church Word of Faith Church at Raleigh, North Carolina, it’s more than just music but about speaking into lives, generations and destinies. Even if you aren’t familiar with Shirley’s music, give it a try for what you heard about her consistency and prowess. She’s come a long way, you wouldn’t be disappointed and Beyoncé’s got nothing on her voice.
